On February 10, a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found the strongest evidence for the effectiveness of lifestyle improvements in reversing prediabetes.Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), α glycosidase inhibitors, and insulin sensitizers may also reverse prediabetes, but their effectiveness is less evident than that of lifestyle interventions. The researchers collected randomized controlled studies of adult prediabetes published between January 1, 2000 and June 27, 2018. Fifty-four studies were used for a systematic review, and 47 studies were used for a meta-analysis. A total of 26 460 patients, with an average age of 53 years, were included, and 46% were male.In these studies, 27 groups assessed lifestyle improvement, 25 drugs, 5 dietary supplements, and 10 traditional Chinese medicine; There were 35 control or placebo groups.During a median follow-up of 1.6 years, the percentage of blood glucose returning to normal was 18% higher in the lifestyle improvement group than in the control group.Blood glucose returned to normal in 1 case, and intervention was required in 6 cases. The strength of evidence for lifestyle improvement is strong.During a median follow-up of 2.7 years, the proportion of normal blood glucose in glP-1 RA group, α glycosidase inhibitor group and insulin sensitizer group was 47%, 29% and 23% higher than that in control group, respectively.Blood glucose returned to normal in 1 case, and the cases requiring treatment were 2 cases, 4 cases and 4 cases, respectively. The strength of evidence for these drugs is moderate.Source: Interventions for Reversing Prediabetes:A Systematic Review and meta-analysis.
